This building, designed by Martin Gropius, was opened in 1881 as a museum of applied arts. Under the direction of the Berliner Festspiele, exhibitions of contemporary and modern art as well as artistic performances are shown at the Gropius Bau today. An artist-in-residence programme invites artists to take an active role in shaping what the building has to offer.
