On the Trail of a Dictatorship – The Central Stasi Prison – Guided Tour in English
The central remand prison of the GDR State Security was located on this site. Between 1951 and 1989, over 11,000 people were imprisoned here for political reasons. Large parts of the site and the buildings have been preserved and provide an authentic impression of the conditions and everyday life in prison.

The permanent exhibition ‘Imprisoned in Hohenschönhausen’ in the main building is completely barrier-free. There are a few steps to overcome on the way to the former prison buildings, which is why the entire site is not wheelchair-accessible. The tours including a visit to the kitchen and the prison hospital are not wheelchair accessible.
