The current special exhibition shows the bold, brightly coloured design style of the Alchimia group, which was founded in Milan in 1976. Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini and their fellow designers fearlessly, and often ironically, combined opulence with cheap materials, functional austerity with playful elements, geometric shapes with eye-catching patterns. In floor-to-ceiling showcases along the whole length of the narrow, winding display path, the icons of fashion history are lit up: Balenciaga’s lavishly draped pink silk dress, Versace’s deep blue evening gown fastened with huge safety pins or Paco Rabanne’s sequin hot pants from 1974.
aefee988-7589-47d1-accb-bb04c29a5b83
Back to the bus stop and it’s on to the final stop – the Jewish Museum. The current special exhibition presents unjustly forgotten German-Jewish female artisans of the interwar period whose careers were abruptly ended by National Socialism. As fashion designers, poster designers and illustrators, they influenced the image of the “new woman”. Through their biographies, the scale of their difficulties in the struggle for visibility and financial independence becomes apparent.

As a fitting accompaniment, Berlin craftswomen will be presenting their creations in the museum’s Glashof during the Long Night of Museums. After so much inspiration, and under expert guidance, you can then grab some fabric, scissors and beads for yourself and make your very own mask.
