# La famiglia – A Neapolitan Evening in a Kreuzberg Backyard

Rachelina and her band Maccheronies will be performing songs from the underworld. Their concert begins at midnight. Rachelina is a Neapolitan from Kreuzberg. She needs no stage and no special props. She takes to the stage, and the museum on Fidicinstreet is transformed into a Neapolitan backyard. She is accompanied by five musicians from across Europe.

Armed with the songs and musical comedies of the Italian playwright Raffaele Viviani, the musicians bring to life on this evening characters who have been waiting for precisely such a place for a century: the water seller, the craftsman, the fisherman, and the figures of the underworld, the guappo, the Camorra man, the prostitute with her pimp. Viviani, the Bertolt Brecht of Naples, has given them all a voice – without romanticising or condemning them, with sharp wit and music that pays no heed to convention.

It is no coincidence that this evening is taking place here of all places. Kurt Mühlenhaupt was a barrel organ player, a casual labourer and a tramp before he became a painter, and his paintings are populated by the very same characters that Viviani brought to the stage: people on the margins, scraping by, sometimes with, sometimes without regard for the law. Kreuzberg and Naples are worlds apart. But the morality of the street knows no city boundaries.
